Types of Credit Awarded

Residency Requirements

Provides students with the amount of study they must complete in order to be awarded the credential in which they are enrolled.

The amount of transfer credit you can receive is limited by Brock University's residency policy. The policy states that at least 5 credits in a 20-credit or 15-credit degree must be completed at the University. Students seeking a second or subsequent degree will be granted transfer credit to a maximum of 10 for a 20-credit degree and a maximum of 7 for a 15-credit degree.

Currency/Timing of Previous Postsecondary Education

Provides students with an indicator of the currency required to utilize their previously completed postsecondary education for transfer credit.

Brock University will consider courses completed within the past 10 years for transfer credit, with the exception of highly technical programs and those with external accreditation body requirements. The Goodman School of Business considers courses completed within the past 5 years for transfer credit.

Challenge for Credit

  • A student must fill out a challenge application form available from the Office of the Registrar (the student may wish to discuss the challenge informally with the Department/Centre prior to this step). 
  • The Office of the Registrar forwards the application to the appropriate Department/Centre, which must decide whether to accept the challenge. The Department/Centre may require documentary material from the student or an interview before making its decision.
  • If the Department/Centre accepts the challenge, the student is eligible to register for it through the Office of the Registrar and is required to pay the applicable fee. A student may not withdraw the challenge after this step; failure to sit for a challenge subsequent to registration represents a failed course. It is the student's responsibility to be fully informed, prior to registration, of the time and nature of the evaluation. This may include one or more of the following: a written exam paper or papers, an essay or essays, the submission of a substantial body of work or a portfolio, an oral examination or a laboratory test.

PLAR Costs

Provides students with the cost of completing a PLAR assessment (challenge exam, course challenge, portfolio, etc.).

A PLAR assessment at Brock University costs $498.70 per full credit for domestic students and $954.15 per full credit for VISA students.

Appearance of Awarded Transfer Credit(s) on Transcript

Provides students with the code(s) used to record transfer credits on their transcript and an indication of whether these credits will be included in GPA calculation.

Transfer credits will be recorded on your Brock University transcript as total credits awarded and the overall transfer average will be included in GPA calculation, if credits are transferred from another university. Credits transferred from a college diploma will not be included in GPA calculation.

  • To track your admission status and see if documents have arrived sign into your Portal at my.brocku.ca. Your acknowledgment e-mail will provide login information.  
  • If necessary for assigning transfer credit, an Admissions Officer may request course descriptions or a more detailed course syllabus. 
  • Brock University makes every attempt to assess and grant transfer credit at the point of admission. A Statement of Advanced Standing outlining any assigned transfer credit can be viewed through your my.brocku.ca Portal. Applicants currently completing a credential will be assessed for additional transfer credit once a final transcript is submitted to Admissions.

Transfer credit decisions at Brock University are generally provided with your offer of admission. If you are still in the process of completing a credential while applying, further transfer credit may be awarded upon completion of the final semester.
