The minimum grade required to transfer a course to Mohawk College is 60%, "C" or a passing grade, whichever is higher unless an articulation agreement exists stating otherwise.

Types of Credit Awarded

Provides students with the types of credit awarded and a brief definition of each (advanced standing, block, exemptions, equivalencies, specified, unspecified, generic, etc.).

Mohawk College awards advanced standing and exemptions (equivalencies) in recognition of previous learning.

Residency Requirements

Provides students with the amount of study they must complete in order to be awarded the credential in which they are enrolled.

The amount of transfer credit you can receive is limited by Mohawk College’s residency policy. The policy states that at least 25% of the program of study must be completed at the College.

Currency/Timing of Previous Postsecondary Education

Provides students with an indicator of the currency required to utilize their previously completed postsecondary education for transfer credit.

Mohawk College will generally consider courses completed within the past 5 years for transfer credit. Requests beyond 5 years will be considered at the discretion of the program area.

PLAR Procedures/Steps

Provides students with the procedures/steps they must follow in order to receive a PLAR assessment.

Follow these steps in order to receive your PLAR assessment at Mohawk College:

  • First select the program you wish to study. Some programs offer regularly scheduled challenge exams, which are advertised in the Continuing Education Calendar under the program name. Refer to the Continuing Education Calendar for specific dates and locations.
  • Portfolios can be submitted for assessment each term. In order to allow sufficient time for processing, assessments should commence in the term prior to the one in which classes are normally offered.   • Applicants must complete a PLAR registration form, attach all relevant documentation and pay the assessment fee. Applications should be directed to the Prior Learning Assessment & Recognition Office at Fennell Campus for distribution to the academic departments.

PLAR Costs

Provides students with the cost of completing a PLAR assessment (challenge exam, course challenge, portfolio, etc.).

A PLAR assessment at Mohawk College costs $151.98 per course and the fee is non-refundable.

Appearance of Awarded Transfer Credit(s) on Transcript

Provides students with the code(s) used to record transfer credits on their transcript and an indication of whether these credits will be included in GPA calculation.

Transfer credits will be recorded on your Mohawk College transcript as "E" and will not be included in GPA calculation.

Transfer Credit Procedures/Steps

Provides students with the procedures/steps they must follow in order to receive a transfer credit assessment.

Follow these steps in order to receive your transfer credit assessment at Mohawk College:

  • Go to the Mohawk College online application form on the Welcome tab of MOCOmotion, click on Self Service, click on Student Information, click on Exemption Menu, click on Exemption Request.
  • Complete the application form, choose the exemption type (regular or General Education course), choose the course for exemption, and enter the transferring institution/course information.
  • Submit your request online and print a copy.
  • Take your copy and supporting documentation to the location indicated. 
  • Check status of your Exemption Request, click on Student Exemption Report under the Exemption Menu, if your exemption request has been Approved, an “E” grade will be posted under View Your Grades on MOCOmotion (if your exemption request has been approved for a General Education elective course, the exemption will be posted against an OPEL GE10x course code) and if your exemption request has been denied, the report will indicate the reason for the denial and give you the name of the person who reviewed your request.

Transfer Credit Costs

Provides students with the cost of completing a transfer credit assessment (advanced standing, exemption, etc.).

There is no fee required for a transfer credit assessment at Mohawk College.

Transfer Credit Required Documentation

Provides students with a listing of the documentation they must submit to have their previously completed postsecondary education assessed for transfer credit.

The documentation required to have your previously completed postsecondary education assessed for transfer credit at Mohawk College includes: 

  • Official transcript(s) in sealed envelope from originating institution
  • Course outline(s)
  • Completed online application form

Transfer Credit Application Form(s)

Provides students with a copy of the transfer credit application form or link to the online submission tool (where applicable).

Complete the online application form at Mohawk College: 

  • Log in to your MOCOmotion e-mail account

Deadline(s) for Application

Provides students with the deadline by which they must apply for transfer credit.

Apply to transfer credit at Mohawk College no later than the 10th day of classes (corresponding to the last day to add/drop courses for fee refund) of the semester pertaining to the exemption request. Late applications may be assessed at the discretion of the program area.

Timing of Transfer Credit Decisions

Provides students with an expectation regarding the time it takes to process a transfer credit decision.

A transfer credit decision at Mohawk College will take 1-2 weeks to process if we are required to send your official transcript and course outline(s) to a Coordinator/Academic Representative for review. The more complete your information is, the more likely the decision can be made quickly.

Review/Appeal Procedures

Provides students with the process for appealing a transfer credit decision.

A transfer credit decision cannot be reviewed/appealed at Mohawk College. All transfer credit assessments are final.
